The past continuous refers to an action that started in the past and was ongoing (when something else happened ).

subject + was/were + verb with ‘-ing.

I                 was           reading

Yo           estaba         leyendo

Uses:

1. An action that was happening in the past at a particular moment.

 -----------------

I was studying English at six o'clock.

2. An action in progress until it is interrupted (Past Simple). "When" is used before the past simple.
-----------------------------X
I was sleeping when the phone rang.
When the phone rang, I was sleeping.

3. Parallel actions. Two actions happening at the same time. We do this by stating the two events, and connecting them with the word ‘while’. ‘While’ can go in between the clauses, or at the start of the sentence.
